A modern Irish classic returns to the American stage
Founded in 1963, Minieapolis' Guthrie Theatre has been dedicated to hosting the thought-provoking classics of the theatre tradition. Now its Proscenium Arch Theatre will see another iconic play unfold on its stage in the form of Sean O'Caseys' 'Juno and The Paycock', one of the most performed and revered plays in Ireland today.
The production is helmed by the artistic director of the Guthrie Theatre Joe Dowling, who last brought this production to Broadway in 1988 amidst much critical acclaim.
What is Juno and The Paycock About?
The outer turmoil of the unstable political situation in Ireland during the Civil War in the 1920's reflects the inner turmoil of a family picking the pieces. Matriarch Juno Boyle must face a drunkard for a husband (so named the Paycock for his talent for drinking his money away), a son wounded and hiding from the authorities, and a daughter with a taste for politics. When news of a large inheritance arrives at their door, their fortunes are seemingly about to change... Tragedy and comedy live side by side in this poignant and haunting look back into Ireland's past.
