New experimental theater by The Moving Company
First premiering in 2015 by students of Texas Performing Arts, Refugia is a piece of experimental theater that explores transition and finding one's way when faced at life's crossroads. Telling five individual stories of refugees spanning the course of the last 15 years of world history, we see the struggles undertaken by those who have had to flee across borders from war, oppression and poverty. With the first years of the 21st century being marred by warfare on a scale never seen before, this modern work is a visceral look into the plight of the refugee, using multi-media special effects and video projection to enhance the storytelling.
Founding member of The Moving Company who are staging the show, Dominique Serrand says of the project, "The first 15 years of the 21st century has been the most devastating years of any century around the globe in terms of wars and dislocation of communities around the world based on their religious, racial or ethnic background. Our show is not an illustration of these acts, but rather a poetic journey about the larger sense of refuge."
