The Lion In Winter Poster

The Lion In Winter

Until December 31, 2016

If you've one of those warring families whose bad behaviors explode over the Christmas turkey meal, then rest assured that nightmare families are nothing new. Meet the Plantagenets. It's 1183, Yuletide is fast approaching and Henry II is feverishly worried about the release of his imprisoned wife (just for the holiday season, mind). Throw into the mix three brattish adult sons, all with their eyes on the throne, and there you have the recipe for an epically royal falling out around the feasting table! A comedy play that puts the hell into holiday!

The Royal Family

January 28 - March 19, 2017

One of the most popular comedy plays of the last century, this charming, tongue-in-cheek parody of the Barrymore acting family comes to the Guthrie stage in Spring 2017. Written by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber it originally premiered out-of-town in 1927, and has remained a regular favorite amongst theater fans for its satirical lampooning at one of entertainment's most famous dynasty. Witty, fast-paced and full of shade, it explores the desires and vanities between three different generations. A must-see for fans who enjoy whip-smart comedy!

Refugia

May 13 - June 11, 2017

First premiering in 2015 by students of Texas Performing Arts, Refugia is a piece of experimental theater that explores transition and finding one's way when faced at life's crossroads. Telling five individual stories of refugees spanning the course of the last 15 years of world history, we see the struggles undertaken by those who have had to flee across borders from war, oppression and poverty. With the first years of the 21st century being marred by warfare on a scale never seen before, this modern work is a visceral look into the plight of the refugee, using multi-media special effects and video projection to enhance the storytelling.

July 15 - August 20, 2017

Recently we have seen a spate of plays entering theater repertory that deal with privilege, class and race, and the conflicts that often ensue; Disgraced and God Of Carnage are just two of these. Enter Native Gardens into the lexicon; a story of two neighboring couples who declare war on each other over their gardens, of all things. A red-hot, knife-sharp comedy to suit anybody who has endured a nightmare neighbour, Karen Zacarias' new play wittily explores class warfare over the fence-line.
