Love and Fairies
The Guthrie Theater's Artistic Director Joe Dowling has a long history with A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was one of the first shows that he staged in his inaugural season back in 1997, and he revived it once again a decade later, so it seems fitting that in his final season at the helm, he will once again bring Shakespeare's magical comedy to the Minneapolis stage. Working alongside choreographer David Bolger (H.M.S. Pinafore), Dowling promises a bold re-imagining of the play, sure to measure up to the vibrant style and expertly delivered comedic scenes of his previous productions.
WHAT IS A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM ABOUT?
A Midsummer Night's Dream focuses on three parallel stories while dealing with the universal theme of love and its complications. It follows the trials of two couples as they camp in a magical forest, the world of the fairy King and Queen who inhabit said forest and a group of tradesmen attempting to stage a production of 'Pyramus and Thisby' for the wedding of the Duke of Athens. In true Shakespearean comedy-style, these stories don't stay separate for long and worlds collide in a spectacularly hilarious fashion. Love, action, magic and comedy mix to create a truly magical spell.
