Why See Sunday In The Park With George?
The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical
Journey into the mind of an artist with this timeless musical love story inspired by the life of French painter Georges Seurat and his masterpiece, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte". Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of love and art, it containts the most beautiful and stirring songs ever written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine outside of Into The Woods, including numbers such as 'Color and Light', 'Gossip' and 'Finishing the Hat'.. Guthrie Theatre is proud to present a little-known gem that packs a huge impact.
Past and present merge into a poignant exploration into the world of the tortured genius artist. Focusing on the character of Georges Seurat, we see how he risks everything, including the love of his paramour Dot to complete his masterpiece. When we fast-forward to a century later in modern-day New York City, his great-grandson, also an artist, looks for inspiration from Georges' painting and discovers much more than a mere idea, but his entire destiny.
