an american drama
Unsettling times in the Motor City are the focus of Steinberg Playwright Award winner and Tony nominee Dominique Morisseau's critically acclaimed play set in her hometown, coming to The Guthrie Theatre in May 2024. A blue-collar mix of characters, working together in an ill-fated auto parts factory bound for foreclosure, share their insecurities as the last remaining employees. Austene Van directs.
What is the story?
Set during the height of the Great Recession in 2008 the prospect of finding themselves unemployed leaves some characters of Skeleton Crew contemplating their options - on both sides of the law - while others question their allegiances towards "the man" and "the people".
The break room of this Detroit stamping plant is where the ensemble cast must determine how they will deal with their changing circumstances and who they will hold accountable. A story of how a city's financial crisis spills over into the personal lives of its inhabitants, and how basic survival is the goal.
With such affection towards her hometown community evident in her writing, it is no wonder Morisseau was honored with a Spirit of Detroit award.
