SHALLOW AT BEST, SHAMEFUL AT WORST
To be clear: I have a fond nostalgia for the original movie. Robin Williams' portrayal was, despite some questionable methods, endearing and sympathetic as a father who is determined to improve for his family. This new production left me so unnerved that I had to look up the original synopsis as I started to question my memory of the movie. After reviewing, I am not only doubtless that the show-runners of this show have given us a production undeniably inferior to the original, but they also managed to insert themes and caricatures so outdated that I am alarmed by how many people green-lit it. I can almost forgive shows for not taking their audiences seriously, but the constant, unsubtle sexist tropes of of the "boring & heartless" mother aimed at Miranda, and the numerous homophobic tropes written for the husband of Daniel's brother are unforgivable and dangerous in this setting. Also, Daniel getting most of the opening songs is manipulative, and the score is entirely forgettable.
